Emirates Airlines Resumes Operations in Nigeria After Two-Year Suspension

Background of Suspension

Emirates Airlines suspended its flight operations to Nigeria in November 2022 due to an inability to repatriate $85 million in trapped revenue. This significant financial issue strained the airline’s presence in the Nigerian market, affecting travel and trade between the two countries.

Minister’s Announcement

On Wednesday, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the airline’s return to Nigeria following a two-year hiatus. He arrived in Lagos aboard an Emirates flight from the United Arab Emirates, marking a pivotal moment in the restoration of services that benefit Nigerian travelers and businesses.

Impacts on Competition and Pricing

Keyamo emphasized that the resumption of Emirates flights would foster healthy competition in the aviation sector, which is expected to lead to more competitive pricing for Nigerian consumers. He stated, “With this, we have more competition on different international routes now. That is what it’s all about to ensure healthy competition for the benefit of the Nigerian people.”

Strengthening Local Carriers

The Minister also highlighted that local airlines would now have opportunities to operate flights to various destinations in the UAE. This development is seen as crucial, especially given the significant investments and interests that Nigerians have in the UAE.

Strategic Discussions and Agreements

Keyamo noted that discussions surrounding a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) had taken place, which aims to secure the route for local operators. “We signed a new BASA defining our relationship altogether, making it healthier, more open, and beneficial for the Nigerian people,” he remarked.

Resolution of Financial Issues

The return of Emirates Airlines was made possible after Keyamo received confirmation in April that all financial issues had been resolved. The recent agreement between Nigeria and the UAE on September 27 established reciprocal rights, facilitating the airline’s operations once again.
