President Tinubu Pledges Unity and Reconciliation in Commemoration of Ogoni Martyrs
President Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to National Unity
President Tinubu emphasizes the need for peace, justice, and mutual respect among Nigeria’s ethnic communities.
Commitment to Dialogue and Reconciliation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities.
His statement was delivered through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Mr. Bayo Onanuga, came in commemoration of the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day.
President Tinubu’s message conveyed a commitment to unity and solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and the Ogoni community, as they honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the protection of the Ogoni nation.
Theme Reflects Aspirations for Peace and Growth
This year’s commemoration, themed “After Price, Comes Prise,” highlights the collective aim to reflect on past struggles while striving for a hopeful future. President Tinubu noted that the theme serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the importance of moving forward with peace, justice, and sustainable development, especially for communities in the Niger Delta.
“We honor their memory by recognizing the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterized by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities,” he said.
Addressing Historical Grievances
President Tinubu emphasized that his administration is committed to addressing historical grievances that have affected communities like Ogoniland. His vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria, he added, will be pursued through “constructive engagement and mutual respect.” Tinubu’s administration aims to work closely with affected communities to resolve long-standing issues stemming from years of marginalization and environmental degradation.
Background: The Ogoni Struggle
The story of Ogoni’s resistance began with the first commercial oil discovery in Oloibiri, Ogoniland, in 1958. Since then, Ogoni leaders have fought to protect their land and people from the harmful effects of oil exploration. This struggle intensified and tragically culminated in the 1995 execution of prominent environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders. These leaders are remembered as martyrs who stood against environmental injustice and fought for the rights of the Ogoni people.
A Call for Justice and a Better Future
President Tinubu concluded by urging all Nigerians to remember the Ogoni Martyrs by committing to a nation where justice prevails and assures that the voices of all citizens are heard.
“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honor their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” he stated.
Through his remarks, President Tinubu seeks to foster a national commitment to healing, unity, and shared prosperity for future generations, setting a hopeful tone for the administration’s vision for Nigeria’s future.
