Celebrating Academic Excellence
In a significant event aimed at promoting girl-child education, As-Salaam the Peace Magazine honored twenty-two exceptional young Muslim women from various universities across Nigeria. The ceremony took place at the Nigerian Society of Engineers Auditorium in Abuja, with prominent figures in attendance to celebrate these remarkable achievers.
Opening Remarks from the Grand Patron
Malam Murtala Aliyu, FNIO, the Grand Patron of the Peace Magazine, presided over the occasion. In his welcome address, he emphasized the magazine’s mission of Islamic advocacy and its commitment to fostering a more informed society.
“Education is essential for both males and females,” he stated, highlighting the cultural constraints that often relegate women to the background. The initiative aims to inspire young girls to pursue their educational ambitions and recognize their potential.
“This will be an annual event,” Aliyu announced, expressing hopes for future connections between mentees and mentors to ensure ongoing growth and support for these young women.
Encouraging Future Generations
Professor Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN, Chairman of the occasion represented by Alhaji Abdulrasheed Usman, reinforced the importance of girl-child education in his opening remarks. He encouraged the honorees to continue striving for excellence and emphasized the initiative’s potential to inspire other young individuals, particularly girls, to pursue their educational goals.
Shattering Stereotypes
AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, PhD, praised the event’s significance, addressing misconceptions surrounding women in hijab.
“Today we celebrate intelligent brains under the veils,” she remarked, advocating for inclusivity and opportunity across all sectors. Baju encouraged young women to challenge stereotypes and pursue their ambitions without excuses.
She stressed the transformative power of education: “When you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation.” Baju called on parents to provide equal educational opportunities for girls, asserting that such investments would yield remarkable results.
Honoree’s Voice
Among the honorees was Dr. Hajara Mohammad Tom, who graduated as the overall best medical student from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. Expressing her gratitude for the recognition, she urged young girls in hijab tto embrace their identity and remain steadfast in their pursuits, regardless of societal stereotypes.
The event by As-Salaam the Peace Magazine not only honored academic excellence but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting and empowering young women in their educational journeys. Through this initiative, the magazine aims to foster a culture of mentorship and inspiration for future generations of Muslim women in Nigeria.
