Tinubu Appoints Major General Olufemi Oluyede Acting Chief of Army Staff
New Appointment Amidst Current Chief’s Indisposition
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army. This appointment comes as the current COAS, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, is temporarily unable to fulfill his duties.
A Distinguished Military Career
Before this new role, Major General Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps, based in Jaji, Kaduna. With a military career that spans several decades, Oluyede is recognized for his extensive experience and strategic acumen. At 56 years old, he began his military journey in 1987, officially commissioning as a second lieutenant in 1992. He attained the rank of Major General in 2020.
Strong Professional Ties
According to a press release from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the president, Major General Oluyede and Lt. General Lagbaja share a deep professional connection, having been course mates in the 39th Regular Course.
Proven Leadership and Command Experience
Major General Oluyede has held various command positions throughout his career, including roles as a Platoon Commander, Company Commander, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School. Notably, he commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade in the North East during Operation HADIN KAI and has participated in international missions, including the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia and Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi.
Recognition and Honors
His exemplary service has earned him numerous accolades, including the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and Membership in the National Institute. Additionally, he has been recognized with the Field Command Medal of Honour, the Field Training Medal, and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.
